As of 2019, more than 34 million family caregivers are providing physical, emotional, or financial support to an adult aged 50 or older [Administration for Community Living, 2019]. On average, caregivers provide 24.4 hours per week of unpaid care to their love one and nearly 23% provide more than 41 hours of care. [NAC and AARP, Caregiving in the U.S., 2015]. The Family Caregiver Alliance has reported that there are higher levels of depressive symptoms and mental health problems among caregivers than among their non-caregiving peers. An Approximate 40 to 70% of caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression, with approximately 25 to 50% of these caregivers meeting the diagnostic criteria for major depression. Not surprisingly, caregivers physical health can also be affected. About one in ten caregivers report that caregiving has caused their physical health to get worse. Despite the likelihood that caregiving is more “when” and not “if”, evidence shows that most caregivers are ill-prepared for their role and provide care with little or no support.
In July of 2019, with the support of the PATH foundation Cornerstone Baptist church began to develop a ministry to support caregivers in our community through partnership, education, and advocacy. We serve caregivers across the lifespan in Fauquier and surrounding counties including caregivers of aging adults, caregivers of children with disabilities, and Foster Care families. We have a vision to create a network of support across our region to meet the growing population and needs of caregivers in our community.
1) A personal connection through our trained caregiver advocates. Our weekly phone calls, homemade meals, and listening ears remind caregivers that they are not alone as they walk out their caregiving journey.
2) Educational workshops to equip family caregivers in their role with powerful tools and specific knowledge. We provide evidence-based tools and access to experts in the field through our Caregiver Cafe and topical workshops.
3) Respite opportunities for caregivers to enjoy time with their friends or other relatives, practice self-care, and relax. Research shows that respite is vital to the health of the caregiver and can greatly mitigate caregiver burnout. We structure each of our events to be a space for caregivers to refresh and connect with one another. We also provide respite scholarships for caregivers to take time away from their loved one.

All donations will go directly to supporting our three main initiatives for this year (see our "Initiatives" tab). While we are a ministry of Cornerstone Baptist Church, we provide services to all caregivers in our community no matter their religious affiliation.
